Frozen Watermelon Cucumber Dog Treats

Any other dog-moms (or dads) out there with a green thumb? I was so excited to start my garden this year, mostly because I failed miserably at gardening last year.

M I S E R A B L Y.

I was determined to succeed in my garden of 2020! When our stay-at-home order went into effect in March, I decided to occupy my time by planning my garden. I ordered a few raised beds off of Amazon, prepped my seed tray, and mapped out where I wanted all of my plants to live. I was set up for success! Things are going much better this year compared to last year, but I am already excited about next season. I want to focus on a few fruits next year, including watermelon.

I primarily planted veggies that were safe for my dogs (just in case they happened to breach my garden and munch on a few things). Plus, I wanted to be able to make treats for them with my own homegrown veggies. It feels so rewarding to eat food from your own garden! When I picked my first cucumber, I knew I wanted to make some frozen treats for my dogs to enjoy. I had to cheat and buy a watermelon at the grocery.

T r u t h: I cheated hard and bought a pre-cut watermelon from the grocery!

Little did I know that August 3rd was also National Watermelon Day! Perfect timing to release this treat recipe. Make sure to scroll to the end of the blog so you can see how I was able to treat myself with these dog treats as well! Watermelon Cucumber frozen treats can be for humans too…

What You’ll Need:

  • 1 cup of seedless watermelon
  • 1 cup of peeled cucumber, sliced lengthwise, seeds scraped out. (This was about one large cucumber)
  • Food processor/Blender
  • Silicone treat molds. You can use an ice cube tray if you don’t have silicone molds on hand, but just make sure the treats are an appropriate size for your pup!

Note: This recipe couldn’t be any easier. You can realistically use as much or as little watermelon and cucumber that you want. It just depends on how many dog-treats you need. I ended up with a little over two dozen heart and bone mold treats. I was excited because I’ve had a silicone treat mold that’s meant for making gummy bears, so I filled that with my leftover watermelon puree!

Simple Frozen Watermelon Cucumber Dog Treats

Ingredients

  • 1 Cup Cucumber

  • 1 Cup Seedless Watermelon

Directions

  • Dice watermelon into small cubes. If you are using a whole watermelon, it is important to make sure the rind is completely removed. Blend watermelon on your blender’s puree setting until it is completely liquified. Set your watermelon aside as you will need your blender container for the watermelon.
  • Peel the outer skin from your cucumber and slice it lengthwise. With a spoon, you will then scrape all of the seeds from the cucumber and discard the seeds. Your cucumber should resemble the pieces pictured. Then dice your cucumber into small pieces. Blend the cucumber on your blender’s puree setting until it is also completely liquified. Put this in the fridge as you will not need it for a couple of hours after step 3.
  • Using a ziplock with a tiny piece of the end snipped off or a spoon – Fill your treat molds halfway with your watermelon puree. Place in the freezer for 1 1/2 hours until they’re completely frozen.
  • After the watermelon is frozen you can repeat step 3 with your cucumber puree and fill the remaining half of each treat mold. Allow to freeze for another 1 1/2 – 2 hours. Enjoy!

Notes

  • Always consult with your vet before introducing any new food or treat to your dog’s diet.
  • This is a dog treat and should never be used to replace your dog’s food. Do not allow your dog to enjoy these treats all at once. Fruit can potentially cause mild stomach upset so it is best to give sparingly.
  • Freezing times could vary. Store treats in an airtight container in the freezer.

Humans Can Enjoy Frozen Watermelon Cucumber Treats Too…

I celebrated National Watermelon Day too! These frozen watermelon-cucumber treats made my watermelon White Claw even more refreshing! I didn’t know that could be possible…

These would also be great in a cold glass of water or traditional lemonade. Invite your friends and their fur-babies over. Everyone can enjoy these treats one way or another!

Disclaimers: White Claw contains alcohol and should be enjoyed responsibly by humans 21 and over. It is never-ever-ever-ever-ever okay to give alcohol to dogs. I am not a vet and do not claim to be one. Always consult with your own vet about any homemade treat before giving them to your dog. The ASPCA has great info on foods that are okay and human foods to avoid feeding your pet.

  1. Oh, my, these look so refreshing and tasty, especially in this hot weather we are having! And I have have that very same mold! I am going to whip up a batch for my Huskies, and for my drinks! Great idea! Sharing this over on our FiveSibes Facebook page, too!

  2. Those look good! Both my dogs love just plain watermelon, I might have to try these as a cool summer treat. Your post made me laugh, this year was my year to fail miserably at gardening. This was our first summer in our new house, in a new part of the country, and I started off excited to garden but quickly found about a million other things to occupy my time. It didn’t help one bit that we have deer, and bears, and moose, and all kinds of other critters. Almost every time one of my plants would start looking hopeful I’d go out to find some animal had gobbled it all up. I’m hoping next year will be my year when it comes to gardening…we’ll see.

    1. It sounds like your new home is in a beautiful spot! I had a few pests this year in my garden, so I’m bummed about the veggies they’ve been able to ruin. I’m already better prepared for next year though. Hopefully next garden season will be better for us both!

  3. What a totally inspired idea. I can see from the keen look that the treats have been a bit hit (and the best part is they are human friendly too!!)

I love the white claw drink and need to look for it if I get to visit the US.

  4. These are so cute. And what a perfect dog snack for the summer days. Cookie used to like watermelon but got so spoiled since that if it doesn’t stink like meat she won’t have it 🙂

  5. These look like something my pups would go WILD about! With my girl’s IBD flare-ups becoming more severe as she gets older, we have been looking into treat options with limited ingredients that she would enjoy – giving her something special without causing any problems for her. I definitely think that these fit the bill!

  6. These look super fun, just the perfect thing for a hot day. I love that they’re human friendly too. I bet they’d be a hit at a barbecue- with the people and the pets.
