Not only is this Halloween Dog Treat Recipe easy, but you can put them in cute Halloween treat bags to hand out to family, friends, and dogs that are tagging along with their trick-or-treaters!
This recipe is the second time I’ve used holiday-themed cookie presses. You can check out my Christmas Dog Treats here! What better shapes to use for this Halloween Dog Treat Recipe than ghosts and pumpkins?! I also created another Spooky Halloween Dog Treat recipe for Halloween 2022 – check them out here!
I was even more excited to use purple sweet potato to add color variation to these Halloween treats. Purple and orange are such a classic Halloween color combo. These would look adorable packaged up as a gift in clear or Halloween-themed treat bags.

We have big news in our household before we dig into the Halloween Dog Treat Recipe…
On October 9th, my husband and I traveled to Indianapolis to rescue a four-year-old French Bulldog named Elvis. Hoosier Bulldog Rescue took Elvis in around the beginning of July this year, about a month after Zeke passed away. I had a great interview and chatted with Ashley from Hoosier Bulldog Rescue last year, and you can read it here.
There was something about Elvis’ story and the hole in my heart that could only be filled by a sweet brindle boy that inspired my husband and me to apply for be Elvis’s forever family. I can’t wait to share more about Elvis with you all soon!
Everyone is adjusting very well, and we couldn’t be happier to have this little boy in our lives. Unfortunately, Elvis wasn’t home with us when I created this Halloween Dog Treat Recipe, but I am already excited to introduce him to the world of homemade dog treats!
Ok, now back to the Halloween Dog Treat Recipe
I used both a purple sweet potato and an orange sweet potato. The purple sweet potato gave such a great purple color for the ghosts! Since January, I have been ordering all of my vegetables from Misfits Market and am almost always able to get my hands on purple sweet potato.
I’ve been so pleased with their customer service and quality of food. If you want to give them a try, you can use code COOKWME-KW3NMHTGXKR to save $10 on your first order, and then you’ll be given a code to share with family and friends for additional savings!
If you can’t find purple sweet potato, don’t worry – these treats will be equally tasty with orange sweet potato. Also, the recipe below is for ONE color and ONE batch of goodies. So if you’re making both purple and orange treats, you will want to follow the recipe twice – once with an orange sweet potato and once with a purple sweet potato.
What You’ll Need for One Color/Batch of Halloween Dog Treats
- I used these cute Halloween-themed cookie presses. If you don’t have time to order the cookie presses, you can roll your dough into small balls and flatten it to about 1/4 of an inch thick. Your treats should be about the size of a quarter.
- 1 1/4 cup of Oat Flour
- 1/4 cup of Unsweetened Applesauce
- 2 tbsp Peanut Butter (No Xylitol as it is toxic to dogs. Aim for single-ingredient peanut butter. Crazy Richards is my favorite.)
- 3/4 Purple or Orange Sweet Potato (Boiled in water until soft and then mashed with a fork)
- Note: If you want to make two colors of treats, follow this recipe a second time.

minutesIngredients
1 1/4 cup of Oat Flour (Make your own by blending old fashioned oats in a food processor)
1/4 cup of Unsweetened Applesauce
2 tbsp of Peanut Butter (No Xylitol as it is toxic to dogs. Aim for single ingredient peanut butter)
3/4 cup of mashed Purple or Orange Sweet Potato
Directions
- Preheat oven to 350 F
- Peel, slice, and boil your orange OR purple sweet potato in water for 15 minutes. Mash with a fork and set aside.
- Combine all ingredients in a bowl and thoroughly combine. Refrigerate the dough for 10-15 minutes if you’re using cookie cutters. This will make it much easier to roll out and cut into shapes.
- Roll out dough to 1/4 inch thickness and use your Halloween-themed cookie cutters to cut out shapes. Lay shapes on a parchment lined baking sheets. These do not spread while baking, so you can place them close together.
- Bake for 22-25 minutes. Treats will be firm and slightly browned on the bottom. Allow to fully cool before serving.
- Follow the recipe through again using your other purple or orange sweet potato if you’re making two colors. Store in an airtight container in the fridge for 7-10 days.
