Could making fresh dog treats like these salmon and spinach dog treats help to improve your dog’s health?

I recently read the book The Forever Dog. This book was incredibly engaging, as it shares health information that benefits your dog in a way that feels very doable. The book does not preach about a single dog diet that’s right or wrong but talks about incorporating healthy diet options to increase your dog’s longevity.

They guide you on incorporating fresh fruits, veggies, and natural meat into your dog’s diet. They express changing 10% of your dog’s diet by incorporating “longevity toppers” can increase your dog’s lifespan. They document dogs that live for 20+ years!

Salmon and spinach dog treats aren’t the magic key to increasing your dog’s lifespan. However, treats are the easiest place to start when incorporating healthier food items into your dog’s diet. Homemade treats give you complete control of ingredients. In our past recipes, you can see that homemade dog treats can be made with limited, wholesome ingredients at a low cost.

An easy and healthy homemade dog treat recipe made with salmon, spinach, chickpea flour, and chia seeds.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 Cup of Chickpea Flour

  • 3 – 5oz containers of canned salmon (see blog and recipe notes for dog-safe canned salmon)

  • 1 chia seed egg (or one regular egg if your dog is not allergic)

  • 1 Cup of fresh spinach

Directions

  • Preheat oven to 375 F.
  • Make your chia egg by combining one tablespoon of chia seeds with three tablespoons on warm water. Whisk together and allow to sit for 5-10 minutes. You will see that they will become thick and gel like.
  • Finely chop your fresh spinach and drain water from your chosen salmon packages.
  • Mix all ingredients in a bowl and place mixture in your silicone molds. If you don’t have silicone molds you can roll the mixture into bite sized meatballs.
  • Bake for 25-35 minutes. I baked mine for the full 35. These are very soft treats, they should be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to five days. Allow to cool completely before removing from the silicone baking molds.

Notes

  • Canned Salmon: You already know that I love Honest Kitchen’s Pure Salmon and Pollock meal topper, so that’s what I used. You can use canned salmon from the grocery store as well. Just make sure it is canned in water with NO salt added. Here’s a great option that you can search for at your local grocer or order on Amazon.
  • Always constult with your vet before introducing new foods to your dog. Be mindful of food sensitivities and introduce new foods slowly. This recipe is simply just a healthy treat for your dog and not meant to replace a full balanced meal.
  • I was able to fill 3 silicone molds and make a single batch of treats in my Dash Dog Treat Maker as well. The quantity will vary depending on how large your treats are or the size of your silicone molds.
  • Oven times may vary. Check treats at 25 minutes and continue baking if they are too moist.
  • Store in an air-tight container in the fridge for up to 5 days.

*Always consult with your vet before introducing new foods to your dog. Be mindful of food sensitivities and introduce new foods slowly. This recipe is simply just a treat for your dog and not meant to replace a full balanced meal or diet.
