Can Dogs Have Smoothies?

I chose some of my pup’s favorite dog-safe fruits and veggies to whip up a Smoothie Lickimat Recipe. I have seen so many great dog-safe smoothie recipes on Instagram lately, and I wanted to whip up our own! But, of course, there are ingredients used in traditional smoothies for humans that aren’t safe for a dog smoothie recipe.

Last Fall, I created another Lickimat recipe that has been a hit on the blog! You can check it out if you want a more veggie-based Lickimat recipe, as this Smoothie Lickimat Recipe has a higher fruit ratio than veggies.

A Smoothie Lickimat Recipe sounds great, but what’s a Lickimat?

Lickimat is a brand of lick mat enrichment activities for dogs and cats. However, there are lots of great lick mats on the market. A lickimat is a food-grade rubber mat in various textures, colors, and patterns.

The textured surface allows you to spread dog-safe foods to encourage licking. The mats are excellent because they make portion control very easy – a little bit of food goes a long way and can encourage licking for an extended period.

Another enrichment toy that both myself and my dogs love is the Toppl from West Paw. You can check out my Toppl suggestions here. I love both Lickmats and Toppls because they’re great for squishy face breeds, like French Bulldogs.

Supplies You Will Need For This Smoothie Lickimat Recipe

First, you will, of course, need a Lickimat! Lickimat can be found in most pet stores, but Amazon has a great collection. There are different brands, but I prefer the Lickimat brand because they’re affordable and offer a great variety. Another brand I enjoy is Soda Pup, which carries various lick mats and enrichment toys.

Smoothie Lickimat Recipe

I made two different smoothie recipes for this blog entry. I did this so the pups had a little variety. You can stick to one of the recipes or create two small batches of the different recipes like I did.

I used fresh strawberries, frozen bananas, fresh blueberries, single-ingredient peanut butter, quick oats, and single-ingredient sweet potato baby food. You can swap the fruit for fresh or frozen. I chose to use frozen banana because it creates a creamier consistency.

I know what you’re thinking. Can dogs eat baby food?

Before I get going here – if you don’t have or want to use sweet potato baby food for this recipe, you can peel, boil, and mash a sweet potato instead. Hear me out, though; baby food can quickly throw together a healthy enrichment activity or could be enjoyed as a meal topper in small portions.

Of course, baby food can never replace full meals for dogs. It can be used for supplemental feeding, like you might feed dog treats. If you have wanted to incorporate more vegetables into your dog’s diet, baby food in the form of dog-safe veggies can make that more manageable if you don’t have time to prep the veggies.

It also makes enrichment SO easy. There’s no prep work involved. So if you’re new to using Lickimat, keep it simple and grab some single-ingredient sweet potato baby food and spread a small amount on the lickimat

I found the sweet potato baby food on Amazon, and it only contains sweet potato and water. It will be a great introduction to enrichment for you and your dog!

What are the health benefits of this Smoothie Lickimat Recipe?

  • Oats: Excellent wheat alternative for dogs sensitive to wheat. Oats are healthy carbohydrates containing Vitamin B, Copper, Magnesium, Calcium, and Iron.
  • Blueberries/Strawberries: These berries have beneficial properties, including antioxidants, fiber, Vitamin C, Vitamin K, manganese, anti-aging properties, low calorie, etc. [Always introduce new fruits to your dog slowly to help prevent any stomach upset.]
  • Peanut Butter: (single-ingredient): Source of protein, healthy fats, Vitamin B, and Vitamin E. [Single-ingredient peanut butter is best, but always ensure the peanut butter you’re serving your pup does NOT contain Xylitol.]
  • Banana: Low-calorie, high in biotin, potassium, and fiber.
  • Sweet Potato: Sweet potatoes can potentially reduce the risk of heart disease in dogs, contains Copper, Calcium, Vitamin C, and Iron, and are high in dietary fiber, which is excellent for digestion.

Bonus! Smoothie Frozen Dog Treats

The recipe below provided enough smoothie mix for me to make four lickimats. I used the leftover smoothie mixture and made frozen dog treats. Place whatever combination you have left over into your favorite dog treat molds.

Two dog-safe smoothie recipes to add to your dog’s lickimat!

Sweet POTATO, STRAWBERRY, AND OAT SMOOTHIE

  • 1/3 Cup Old Fashioned or Quick Oats

  • 1/2 Cup Fresh or Frozen Strawberries

  • 4 oz container of Sweet Potato Baby Food ( sing ingredient – see notes*)

  • PEANUT BUTTER, BLUEBERRY, AND BANANA SMOOTHIE
  • 1/4 Cup Peanut Butter (single ingredient*)

  • 1/2 Cup Fresh or Frozen Banana

  • 1/2 Cup of Fresh or Frozen Blueberries

  • 1/4 Cup of Cold water

Directions

  • Start with the sweet potato baby food, strawberries, and oats. Place all three ingredients in a blender or food processor. Blend until smooth and set aside.
  • Next place the blueberries, banana, peanut butter, and cold water in your blender. Blend until smooth.
  • Spread a few tablespoons of each mixture onto your dog’s lickimat. You can give the lickimat to your dog or freeze the lickimat for a longer lasting enrichment activity. (I did not freeze mine but it’s a great option if you need the lickimat to last longer)
  • Left over smoothie mixture? This smoothie lickimat recipe can double as frozen dog treats! Just add your left over smoothie mix to your favorite dog treat molds and place in the freezer.

Notes

  • If you’re using sweet potato baby food – make sure it is single ingredient. The option I chose only contained sweet potato ad water. If you’re using fresh sweet potato just peel, boil, and mash before adding it to the blender with the other ingredients.
  • I try to only use single ingredient peanut butter when making treats for the dogs. Whatever you use, make sure it does NOT contain Xylitol as Xylitol is toxic to dogs.
  • You can use fresh or frozen fruit. Using a frozen banana will create a creamier smoothie mix.
  • If your mixture is too thick or your blender is having trouble, just add a little cold water to either recipe.
  • You can opt to only use one of these recipes or give your dog a variety of flavors and use both recipes.
  • *Always consult with your vet before introducing new foods to your dog. Be mindful of food sensitivities and introduce new foods slowly. This recipe is simply just a treat for your dog and not meant to replace a full balanced meal or diet.
  • This recipe created four lickimats. There was also enough smoothie mix leftover to make frozen dog treats. Notes about using leftovers to make frozen dog treats is listed in the blog text above the recipe card.
