Spooky Halloween Dog Treat Recipe

We are kicking off Spooky Season with a Spooky Halloween Dog Treat Recipe! Believe it or not, I created these dark purple dog treats using fruits and veggies.

Hocus Pocus 2 came out, and I woke up the morning after watching it ready to whip up a Spooky Halloween Dog Treat Recipe for the dogs. I purchased some new Halloween cookie stamps this year and was excited to put them to use. But, most importantly, I was ready to test my ability to create a healthy and naturally dark purple treat.

Another great thing about these dog treats is that you only need four ingredients! If you’re new to the blog, all my treat recipes are egg, wheat, and dairy free. We manage several food sensitivities with my dogs, so I always try to make our recipes as simple as possible. Limited ingredient not only often means healthier treats, but they’re more affordable to create and more agreeable to dogs with food allergies.

*Always consult with your vet before introducing new foods to your dog. Be mindful of food sensitivities and introduce new foods slowly. This recipe is simply just a treat for your dog and not meant to replace a full balanced meal or diet.

Spooky Halloween Dog Treat Recipe

You only need blueberries, fresh beets, unsweetened applesauce, and brown rice flour. You can use fresh or frozen blueberries; I always freeze our blueberries, so I have them on hand whenever I need them. Make sure you’re only using fresh or frozen beets without any additives. Do not use any version of canned beets, as many of the additives are not safe for dogs.

Using unsweetened applesauce in dog treat recipes is a great alternative for eggs. Just make sure the applesauce you’re using is truly unsweetened and only contains apples and possibly water as an ingredient. Artificial sweeteners can be dangerous for dogs to consume. Brown rice flour is a great wheat-free flour, and you can keep reading about brown rice’s health benefits.

I also added these cute halloween cookie cutters to my collection. I also used my ghost cookie cutter from the Oat and Sweet Potato Halloween Dog Treats that I made last year. You will need a rolling pin and a food processor or blender to puree the unsweetened applesauce, blueberries, and steamed beets.

Is this Dog Treat Recipe healthy?

Of course! I always make sure the ingredients that I include serve a healthy purpose. For example, while dog treats are strictly only for supplemental feeding, there’s no reason they can’t be tasty and healthy for your dogs. The ASPCA is a great resource for learning about foods you can safely share with your dog.

  • Apples (Unsweetened Applesauce): High in fiber, Vitamins A & C, and is a good source of antioxidants.
  • Blueberries: Low-calorie, contain antioxidants, Vitamins C and K, fiber, and their nutrients support the immune system.
  • Red Beets: Source of potassium, Vitamin C, manganese, and folate. All of these aid in digestion and can benefit the immune system.
  • Brown Rice Flour: Rich source of dietary fiber and low glycemic index, brown rice contains two different antioxidants.

We don’t use beets very often, so I was curious what the dogs would think of these treats. I am thrilled to report they loved them, and I genuinely hope your dog does too!

An easy and healthy Halloween inspired dog treat recipe.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 Cups of Brown Rice Flour

  • 1/4 Cup of Unsweetened Applesauce

  • 1/2 Cup of Fresh or Frozen Blueberries

  • 1/3 Cup of Steamed Red Beet (Dice into small pieces)

Directions

  • Scrub your whole beet and place it in your steamer basket. Fill your pot with a few inches of water and steam the entire beet for 30-40 minutes. You will be able to easily pierce the beet with a fork when it’s done. Remove and allow to cool until you can handle it comfortably. You may need to check the water level as you’re steaming, add more water if needed.
  • Preheat oven to 350 F
  • Measure your brown rice flour and set aside in a bowl.
  • Once your beet has cooled, slice in half. Make sure you remove the skin by slicing or peeling it off, and discard. Dice 1/3 cup of the beet and set aside.
  • Add 1/3 cup of steamed beets, 1/2 cup of blueberries, and 1/4 cup of unsweetened applesauce to a blender. Puree until the fruits and veggies are liquified.
  • Add your liquid mixture to the brown rice flour and stir to combine. I used a pastry cutter once the dough became thick, but you can use a fork or your hands. Form into a large dough ball and place in the fridge for 10-15 minutes.
  • At this stage I like to split my dough ball in half and only roll out one half at a time. Cold dough is easier to work with when you’re cutting shapes. Lightly flatten your dough ball in between two pieces of parchment paper.
  • Roll out the dough to 1/4” thickness, use your cookie cutters, and place each shape on a parchment lined baking sheet. The treats will not spread during baking, so you don’t need to worry about them being too close together. Take your second dough ball from the fridge and repeat the prior steps.
  • Bake the treats for 10-12 minutes. Allow to cool completely and store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to one week.

Notes

  • *Always consult with your vet before introducing new foods to your dog. Be mindful of food sensitivities and introduce new foods slowly. This recipe is simply just a treat for your dog and not meant to replace a full balanced meal or diet.
  • Make sure your applesauce is unsweetened and not ’sugar-free’. Artificial sweeteners are not safe for your dog.
  • I steamed a whole medium-sized beet for this recipe. Your grocery store may have frozen beets in the freezer section or pre-cut raw beets in the produce area – just make sure to steam/cook the beets prior to using them in the recipe. Never feed your dog any version of canned beets.
