Ready to teach your dog to paint? Let’s start with some simple color theory…

Let your creativity (and your dogs) shine through! The fun thing about this project is you can choose whatever colors you want. To keep the paintings bright, and beautiful we want to try and avoid choosing colors that get muddy when blended. Check out the color wheel below for reference.

Teach your dog to paint color wheel
Use this color wheel for reference when choosing your paint colors.
  • Complementary colors: Two colors that are opposite from each other on the color wheel. For example: red and green, yellow and purple, blue and orange. These colors will cancel each other out when blended and make a brown or muddy color.
  • Analogous colors: Three colors that are next to each other on the color wheel. For example, Blue, Green, and Yellow. As these colors blend, they will also make different hues in the same color families. These colors can blend to create beautiful artwork!
  • Warm and Cool Colors: Blending colors like blue and purple can create a cool feeling. Blending red and orange can create a warm feeling. Choose cool, warm, or go crazy and mix them. Red and purple could create some beautiful tones together when blended.
  • White and Black: White can help to mix with other colors to make more pastels. Black paint can be used to bring a little depth! Use black sparingly as it can quickly take over all of the other colors you’ve chosen.

Supplies you’ll need to teach your dog to paint…

Supplies: Small canvases, acrylic paint, spreadable treat that is safe for dogs, ziploc bags, easels for displaying your finished paintings (optional)

It’s time to start painting!

This is a really simple DIY painting project for you and your dog. It only takes about five minutes for your dog to create a beautiful masterpiece!

Step One: Cover a small canvas in your chosen paint colors. Your placement of the paint on the canvas could be completely random or intentional. Let your creativity shine! Make sure to be generous with your globs or lines of paint so that it will spread easily.

Step Two: Spread your chosen dog-safe snack over each Ziploc bag that you’re using.

Step Three: Place your canvas in the Ziploc bag, squeeze out as much air as possible, and make sure the bag is completely sealed.

Step Four: I used some old dish towels to protect the surface of my floor but it wasn’t completely necessary. I placed each sealed bag on the ground and allowed the pups to enjoy licking the peanut butter from the bag.

The motion and pressure from your dog licking their treat off of the bag will allow the paint to safely spread over the canvas in the Ziploc bag. Make sure you’re monitoring them while they do this. I didn’t have any issues but you’ll of course want to make sure your dog is not trying to chew the bag at all.

Step Five: As soon as the dogs were done licking their peanut butter off of their bag, I was able to pull out their paintings and allow them to dry. I never knew teaching my dog to paint would be so simple and fun!

Step Six: Gently pull the paintings from each bag and allow them to dry for roughly one day.
