Valentine’s Day Dog Treat Recipe

It is so dreary and cold in Michigan right now! But, I love it when Valentine’s Day rolls around because I love the red, pink, and purple color schemes that add a little brightness to the gray winter. So, this Valentine’s Day Dog Treat Recipe is naturally sweet and adds a little pop of pink to your kitchen!

I love that these treats get their pink shade naturally from healthy beets. They also have a healthy dose of sweetness that your pup will love with the banana and unsweetened applesauce.

You might now know that this isn’t my first Valentine’s Day dog treat recipe.

I released this DIY Strawberry Valentine’s Day Dog Treat Recipe when I started my blog. It has a bit of yummy peanut butter thrown in, and it’s the excellent wheat, egg, and dairy-free treat recipe that my blog is built around. However, it makes such a large batch!

It feels so good to see how I’ve developed my recipe skills. So many of my treat recipes are more focused on small batches so that you can have a constant rotation of fresh treats.

Even though these Valentine’s Day-inspired dog treats only need four ingredients, they still pack a healthy punch!

  • Brown Rice Flour: Rich source of dietary fiber, low glycemic index, brown rice contains two different antioxidants.
  • Beets: Source of potassium, Vitamin C, manganese, and folate. All of these aid in digestion and can benefit the immune system.
  • Banana: Low-calorie, high in biotin, potassium, and fiber.
  • Unsweetened Applesauce: Vitamin A, which is excellent for eye health and can help to boost the immune system, contain Vitamin C, which can aid in muscle and bone development.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups of brown rice flour

  • 1/4 cup of unsweetened applesauce

  • 1 ripe banana

  • 1/3 cup of chopped & steamed beets

Directions

  • Preheat ove to 350 F.
  • Scrub your beet and place in your steamer basket. Fill your pot with a few inches of water and steam the entire beet for 30-40 minutes. You will be able to easily pierce with a fork when it’s done. Remove and allow to cool until you can handle it comfortably.
  • Slice the beet in half and fully remove the skin. You do not want any of the skin to go into your recipe. I chopped my beet once the skin was removed and measure out 1/3 cup.
  • Place the 1/3 cup of steamed beet, 1/4 cup of unsweetened applesauce, and peeled banana in a blender and puree.
  • Add the 1 and a 1/2 cups of brown rice and beet-banana-unsweetened applesauce puree in a bowl, and stir until fully combined.
  • Refrigerate the dough for about 10 minutes. This will help the process of rolling it out. Set aside two pieces of parchment paper while the dough chills.
  • Lay the chilled dough on one sheet of parchment, lay another sheet of parchment on top, use you’re rolling pin to roll out the dough to about 1/2” thickness.
  • Use your cookie cutter until all of the dough is used. Place on a parchment lined baking sheet. These treats do not rise or spread, so you don’t need much space between the treats.
  • Bake for 10-12 minutes. This treats are firm but not dry and crunchy. Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to one week.

  • Make sure your beet is fully steamed or roasted, and the skin is fully removed before blending.
  • Make sure your applesauce is unsweetened. Traditional applesauce or ”sugar-free” applesauce is not considered safe for your dog.
