Let’s break down the ingredients of these Sweet potato and Spinach Dog Treats so I can show you their health benefits.
- Sweet Potato: A rich source of vitamins A, B6, potassium, calcium, and Iron. Vitamin A helps to promote a healthy coat, eyes, skin, nerves, and muscles. In addition, they are low in fat and contain high fiber, making them great for digestive health.
- Spinach: Nutrient-dense containing Iron, antioxidants, and beta-carotene, considered roughage which can stimulate the digestive tract.
- Coconut Oil: Can help to improve skin and coat health, aiding in digestion, it can reduce inflammation, and can even help to eliminate bad breath.
- Honey: (optional – do not give honey to dogs under one year of age): Antioxidant, Vitamins A, C, and E, immunity booster.
- Oats: Oats are an excellent wheat alternative for dogs sensitive to wheat. Oats are a healthy carbohydrate and contain Vitamin B, Copper, Magnesium, Calcium, and Iron.

minutesHomemade sweet potato and spinach dog treats. Great for dogs with food sensitivities.
Ingredients
1 Cup of Brown Rice Flour
1/2 Cup of Whole Grain Quick Oats
1 Cup Mashed Sweet Potato (Boiled/Fully Cooked)
1 Cup of Fresh Spinach (Chopped)
2 TBSP Coconut Oil (Melted)
1 TBSP Honey (Optional. Do not feed honey to dogs under one year of age.)
Directions
- Bring a pot of water to a boil. Peel and evenly slice one large sweet potato. Boil sweet potato for about 20 minutes or until fork tender. Drain from water, mash, and set aside to cool.
- Preheat oven to 350 F.
- Clean and chop one cup of fresh spinach. Blot with a paper towel to remove any excess water.
- Combine brown rice flour, oats, chopped spinach, mashed sweet potato, melted coconut oil, and optional honey. Stir to combine all ingredients.
- On a parchment lined baking sheet: drop tsp sized dough balls onto your baking sheet. Very slightly flatten each treat with a spoon or your fingers. These treats will not rise or spread so it is safe to place them closely together on the baking sheet.
- Bake for 20-25 minutes. I went the full 25 minutes for a crispier treat. Oven times may vary. Allow the treats to cool and place them in an airtight container in the fridge for 5-7 days.
Notes
- If you have extra mashed sweet potato: Add a small amount to your dog’s dinner bowl.
- Honey should not be fed to dogs that are under the age of one.
- *Always consult with your vet before introducing new foods to your dog. Be mindful of food sensitivities and introduce new foods slowly. This recipe is simply just a treat for your dog and not meant to replace a full balanced meal or diet.
- I do not recommend frozen spinach for this recipe.
