  • Brown Rice Flour: Rich source of dietary fiber and low glycemic index, brown rice contains two different antioxidants.
  • Oat Flour: Oats are an excellent wheat alternative for dogs sensitive to wheat. Oats are a healthy carbohydrate and contain Vitamin B, Copper, Magnesium, Calcium, and Iron.
  • Coconut Oil: Can help to improve skin and coat health, aiding in digestion, it can reduce inflammation, and can even help to eliminate bad breath.
  • Unsweetened Applesauce: High in fiber, Vitamins A & C, and is a good source of antioxidants.
  • Chia Seeds: These little seeds are considered a superfood! Chia seeds are high in protein and fiber, may help reduce inflammation, aid brain function, and are a great source of Omega-3 fatty acids.
  • Strawberry: This fruit can help to strengthen the immune system, contains Folic Acid, Vitamins B6 and K, and also contains potassium.

Green Treat Ingredients

  • 1/2 Cup of Oat Flour

  • 1 Cup of Brown Rice Flour

  • 1/2 Cup of Unsweetened Applesauce

  • 1/2 Cup of Peas (I used frozen and steamed them in the microwave)

  • 2 TBSP Melted Coconut Oil

  • Strawberry Chia Seed Jam Filling
  • 1 cup Fresh Strawberries (Washed and roughly chopped)

  • 3 TBSP of Chia Seeds

Directions

  • Purée your strawberries, there should not be any large strawberry pieces in your purée. Pour into a bowl, add 3 TBSP of chia seeds, stir to combine. Set aside while you prepare the cookies. By the time you’re ready, the chia seeds should have formed a thick strawberry jam.
  • Preheat oven to 350 F.
  • Measure 1/2 cup of frozen peas into a glass bowl. Add a small amount of water and microwave them for 1-2 minutes until warm. Drain all water from the bowl.
  • Purée steamed peas, coconut oil, and unsweetened applesauce in a high speed blender. The mixture should be very smooth once complete.
  • Whisk the oat flour and brown rice flour together in a glass bowl. Add your puréed pea mixture and mix until fully combined with the flour mixture.
  • Place your dough in the freezer for 10 minutes. Don’t skip this step (I know it’s annoying) but the chilled dough will be much easier to roll out.
  • Work with one half of the dough at a time. Place half of your dough between to pieces of parchment paper, roll out the dough to 1/4 inch thickness, repeat with the other half of your dough.
  • Using your circle cooking cutter, cut an even number of circular dough pieces.
  • Using your tiny heart cookie cutter, remove a single heart shape from the center of half of your ç dough cut into circles. You can take the tiny heart cut outs and form more cookies if you would like.
  • Spoon 1/4 tsp of your strawberry chia seed jam onto each full circle, then gently press the heart cutout pieces on top of the jam. You’re essentially creating a sandwich cookie dog treat. Place each sandwich cookie treat on a parchment lined baking sheet. The treats will not spread while baking.
  • Bake for 15 minutes. Oven times will vary – start checking your treats for doneness around the 12 minute mark. Cookies will be firm but not crunchy.

Notes

  • *Always consult with your vet before introducing new foods to your dog. Be mindful of food sensitivities and introduce new foods slowly. This recipe is simply just a treat for your dog and not meant to replace a full balanced meal or diet.
  • Store these treats in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days.
  • Any left over chia seed jam can be made into frozen dog treats or used as a yummy food topper in small amounts.
  • Do not use regular store bought jam for these treats. Please make your own dog-safe chia seed jam per the recipe instructions. Store bought jam can have various ingredients that could be toxic to your dog.
  • Make sure you are using unsweetened applesauce. Regular applesauce contains added sugar and sugar free applesauce can contain xylitol which is toxic to dogs.
  • Use frozen peas with no added ingredients and not canned peas. Canned pea can be high in sodium and contain other potentially toxic ingredients for your dog.
