DIY Dehydrated Apple Dog Treats

Here’s a quick overview of our super simple recipe. Keep reading for additional info, tips, and health benefits of apples for your pup!

As you’ll probably learn, I am crazy about single ingredient dog treats. Not only because I am managing multiple food allergies but because I want to be mindful of what is going into my dogs body. We were given a very generous bag of goodies from Yoda’s breeder when we brought him home. I fed him some treats we received that were so soft and chewy in consistency that I should have known they weren’t a quality treat from the start (if I imagine what a bag of junk food would look like for a dog this would have been it). Within the hour his entire body was covered in hives! I looked at the ingredients listed on the bag and never would have been able to pinpoint anything because there were 20+ ingredients listed. That was the day I learned that I would have to be way more aware of what I was allowing my dog to eat regardless of how ‘cute’ the packaging was or because it was a gift.

These apple treats are seriously so easy and affordable (under $3.00 for the organic apples) that I highly suggest giving them a try! I love making treats for my pups, seeing how much they enjoy them, and also knowing there’s nothing bad in them.

I found a lot of different recipe suggestions when searching the internet about dehydrated apples such as, soaking the slices in lemon juice to prevent browning and to sprinkle cinnamon on the slices before dehydrating. If you choose to use cinnamon make sure it does not contain Nutmeg. I really wanted to just dehydrate apples without any additives. So this recipe only contains apples. Side note: I had zero issues with the apples browning or looking unattractive because I chose to omit a lemon juice soak. I suggest choosing a sweeter variety (I chose honey crisp apples.) If your dog is a fan of a more tart apple those can be used too. Make sure the apples are peeled, cored, and the seeds are removed. Apples are a healthy treat for dogs in moderation but the seeds could be toxic. See recipe notes for additional info about apple seeds and safety.

I used my handy apple peeler and corer but you can of course easily peel and core the apple yourself. I personally would end up cutting AT LEAST two of my fingers if I tried to peel an apple with a knife. I am not very talented when it comes to slicing and dicing fruits or veggies. Anyway, store these on your counter in an air tight container for up to six months (ours lasted about two weeks between our four dogs!) These are a healthy treat in moderation due to the fact the are a good source of vitamin A, C, antioxidants, and dietary fiber. I most definitely snacked on a few of these myself when they were done!

Ingredients

  • 2 Apples – I chose Organic Honey Crisp but you can use any sweeter variety.

Directions

  • Preheat your oven to 175 degrees.
  • Peel, core, and slice your apples roughly 1/4″ thick. Then cut them into whatever size treats you prefer. I chose to cut my slices into quarters.

  • Lightly spray your backing rack with oil.
  • Place apple slices on the baking rack so that there is sufficient space in between each apple slice. You want air to be able to circulate around each individual piece.
  • Bake for 5-6 hours. After cooling the apples should be fairly crunchy.

Notes

  • Make sure your apples are cored and seeds are completely removed. It would take an ABUNDANCE of seeds to cause any upset to your dog so don’t worry too much if your dog sneaks a seed off of the floor. Just play it on the safe side and try to avoid letting them get any seeds or the core.
  • Check your apples after 5 hours and if you feel they still need time just put them back in the oven for one additional hour. The variety of apples you choose is totally up to you! If you’re dog likes a tart Granny Smith go for it!
