  • Blueberries: Low-calorie, contain antioxidants, Vitamins C and K, fiber, and their nutrients support the immune system.
  •  Chia Seeds: These little seeds are considered a superfood! Chia seeds are high in protein and fiber, may help reduce inflammation, aid brain function, and are a great source of Omega-3 fatty acids.
  • Banana: Low-calorie, high in biotin, potassium, and fiber.
  • Plain Coconut Milk Yogurt or Plain Greek Yogurt: Yogurt contains Probiotics for gut health and immunity, calcium, magnesium, and protein. See notes below about choosing dog-safe yogurt.
  • Oats: Oats are an excellent wheat alternative for dogs sensitive to wheat. Oats are a healthy carbohydrate and contain Vitamin B, Copper, Magnesium, Calcium, and Iron.

Notes about this Healthy Lick Mat Recipe

  • It is best to feed yogurt in small amounts. Always make sure the yogurt is plain, never sweetened with no added fruits. Xylitol can be toxic to dogs so always make sure this ingredient is not in your chosen yogurt. We opted for plant-based yogurt due to Luna’s dairy allergy. Plain Greek yogurt is great due to it being lower in lactose than regular yogurt.
  • This recipe was split between my four dogs. Feel free to reduce ingredients or prep a few lick mats and freeze them for later.
  • I had some left-over blueberry oat mix that I froze in the Messy Mutts Silicone Popsicle Mold for bonus frozen treats!

Healthy Lick Mat Recipe for Dogs

Course: French Bulldog BlogDifficulty: Easy
Prep time

15

minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 Cup of Blueberries

  • 1 TBSP of Chia Seeds

  • 1 Banana

  • 1/2 Cup of Plain Coconut Milk Yogurt or Plain Greek Yogurt

  • 1 Cup of Quick Oats

  • 1/2 Cup of Cold Water

  • Extra Banana and Blueberries (optional)

Directions

  • Blend blueberries until fully puréed. Pour the blueberry purée into a bowl and mix in your chia seeds. Allow to sit for 10-minutes. The chia seeds will create a thick dog-safe blueberry jam.
  • Blend the water, banana, and chosen yogurt until smooth. Pour the blended ingredients into your oats and allow to sit for 10-15 minutes.
  • Add about 1/4 cup of the oat mixture to the bowl portion of the lick mat. Next you will add a few small dollops of the chia seed and blueberry mixture. Use a spoon or spatula to gently swirl the oats and blueberry mix together.
  • Add a few fresh blueberries and banana slices to the corner of the lick mat. I opted to give my dogs their lick mat fresh but you can also freeze for an extended enrichment activity.
