Is Coconut Oil Good for Dogs?

There is a lot of great information about feeding coconut oil to dogs. However, I always suggest doing your research and consulting with your vet to decide if supplementing with coconut oil is suitable for your dog.

I was excited about the New Organic Coconut Oil from Natural Dog Company for many different reasons. First, this coconut oil is intended for dogs and comes with a feeding guide for your dog. Second, I am always apprehensive about using coconut oil from the grocery store because it’s hard to know the appropriate serving size, if it’s safe for your dog, etc.

Natural Dog Company takes all of that worry away because it’s a company that is passionate about canine wellness. Between their clear feeding instructions and the fact that their Coconut Oil is organic, cold-pressed, and unrefined – I can feel good about adding Natural Dog Company’s Coconut Oil to my dog’s diet.

Okay, back to the point. Is Coconut Oil a healthy option for dogs? And what health benefits do strawberries and pineapple add?

How Do I Make These Pineapple Strawberry and Coconut Frozen Dog Treats?

Pineapple Strawberry and Coconut Frozen Dog Treats

Pineapples, Strawberries, and Coconut Oil are a few of the healthy ingredients that come together to make this tasty treat. Just toss some frozen strawberries and pineapple, and purée with a bit of water in a blender.

Then, evenly distribute amongst your treat molds, and top off with a little bit of coconut oil. Be mindful of the suggested coconut oil serving for your dog’s size. Natural Dog Company lists serving suggestions on their container.

I went with 1/4 of the recommended serving amount of Coconut Oil for my dogs. That way, my dogs could get used to the coconut oil, and if I fed them two treats in one day, I wouldn’t have to be concerned with going over their serving size. *See recipe notes about serving size.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 Cup of Frozen or Fresh Strawberries

  • 1/2 Cup of Frozen or Fresh Pineapple

  • 1/2 Cup up to 1 Cup of Cold Water

  • Coconut Oil (See notes about amount. I used 1/4 tsp. per treat)

Directions

  • If using fresh strawberries make sure they are clean and leaves/stems are removed. If using fresh pineapple make sure it is fully peeled and cored. Using already packaged frozen fruit makes this recipe extra easy.
  • Put strawberries, pineapple, and 1/2-1 cup of water in your blender and puree until smooth. Start with 1/2 cup of water and add more until you achieve a smooth consistency.
  • Using a teaspoon, gently poor the fruit mixture into each silicone mold until each mold is about 3/4 of the way full.
  • Gently warm your coconut oil in a double boiler or the microwave. Heat in 10 second increments if using a microwave. Follow the serving suggestion of Coconut Oil on the back of the Natural Dog Company’s Coconut Oil container. I went with one quarter of the recommended feeding quantity for my dogs size.* So each silicone mold has 1/4 tsp of coconut oil in each bone mold shape for this recipe.
  • Freeze for at least two hours before serving to your dog.

Notes

  • Natural Dog Company recommends feeding 1 tsp of coconut oil per 10 pounds of body weight. Start with 1/4 of the recommended serving size when feeding coconut oil for the first time.
  • Gently warm your coconut oil. It melts very quickly and you do not want to boil or burn the oil. Handle the warm oil with care.
  • Remember to be mindful about the quantity of treats you feed your dog each day. Coconut oil should be fed according to your dogs size.
  • *Always consult with your vet before introducing new foods to your dog. Be mindful of food sensitivities and introduce new foods slowly. This recipe is simply just a treat for your dog and not meant to replace a full balanced meal or diet.
