Don’t forget to eat your spinach! This new recipe for Spinach Muffin Dog Treats will help your dog fall in love with this leafy green…
My focus this year was to incorporate more greens into my diet. I have been doing pretty well so far, which says a lot because I R E A L L Y love potatoes and pasta. Of course, I wanted to create a treat recipe for the dogs that also incorporated greens. I never expected that these Spinach Muffin Dog Treats would be such a hit with the dogs!
If you checked out my “Choosing the Right Treats” entry, then you know I am also putting a focus on finding better treat options for my pups. With National Muffin Day on February 21st of this year, and a desire to convince my dogs to eat spinach, I knew this would be the perfect time to give this recipe a try.
I incorporated whole blueberries into this recipe but after seeing how crazy my dogs went over these Spinach Muffin Dog Treats – I almost think I could have skipped the blueberries. I couldn’t even get a clear photo of them enjoying these treats (hence all of the somewhat blurry pictures in the blog entry.)
The dogs were howling over these Spinach Muffin Dog Treats!
Zeke, who is my most difficult dog to impress with healthy treats, started howling anytime I would open the container that I was storing these treats in. It’s safe to say these treats were a hit.

Spinach Muffin Dog Treats Health Benefits
- Spinach: Spinach is very nutrient dense. It’s important to check with your Vet before incorporating Spinach into your dogs diet (especially dogs with kidney issues) but my dogs have always done well with Spinach. Spinach contains Vitamins A, B, C and K. It is also a great source for iron and antioxidants.
- Blueberries: These are also rich in Vitamins C and K, they are low calorie, and contain antioxidants.
- Oats: A perfect wheat substitute for dogs with sensitivities! Oats are also a great source of fiber and Vitamins B5 and B9.
- Unsweetened Applesauce: A great source of fiber, calcium, Vitamin C, and is low in calories.
- Almond Flour: This ingredient is high in proteins, contains fiber, and Vitamin E.

Ingredients
1 Cup of Almond Flour
½ Cup of Quick Oats
1 Cup of fresh Spinach (washed and rinsed)
1 Cup of fresh Blueberries
¾ Cup of Unsweetened Applesauce
Directions
- Preheat oven to 350 F
- Place 3/4 cup of unsweetened applesauce and 1 cup of spinach in a blender and purée. This should create a dark green blend of spinach and apple sauce.
- Place 1/2 cup of quick oats and 1 cup of almond flour into a mixing bowl. Pour in your puréed applesauce and spinach mix. Thoroughly combine these ingredients with a spatula.
- Fold in one cup of fresh blueberries.
- Fill your mini muffin pan with the batter. I fit about one tablespoon of batter in 22 of the mini muffin cups of my silicone muffin pan.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes (oven times may vary). Muffins should appear firm but will still be moist. Allow to cool completely before removing them from your muffin pan. Store in the refrigerator for up to one week.
Notes
- Consult with your Vet before introducing new treats into your dogs diet. Any new food introduced to your dog could cause mild tummy upset.
- Feed these treats sparingly and ask your Vet if Spinach is okay for your dog. See notes in this blog entry about Spinach.
- Oven times may vary. My muffins were fully baked in 30 minutes and easily popped out of my silicone mini muffin pan once they completely cooled.
- You may need to break these muffins into smaller pieces for your dog.
*Always consult with your vet about dog treats, treat ingredients, and any other dietary concerns for your pet. All of my suggestions above are merely suggestions – consulting with your Vet is the only way to know if a treat is right for your dog. All opinions of the dog treats are my own.
