July is National Blueberry Month which gave me a great reason to make these Blueberry Banana Fruit Leather Dog Treats.
Hi friends, I am sad to report that Zeke crossed the rainbow bridge in early June. He had a pretty great life for fourteen years, and my husband, myself, and my other dogs have spent the past few weeks celebrating Zeke’s life and missing him greatly. It’s been hard to get back into the swing of things but making these Blueberry Banana Fruit Leather Dog Treats was fun.

I recently purchased a dehydrator, mainly to make dog treats and dehydrate herbs from my garden. I had never even heard of homemade fruit leather until I started reading the instruction guide for my Hamilton-Beach Dehydrator. Then, my wheels started turning, and I thought a dog-safe fruit leather would be a great way to start my dehydrated dog treat journey.
July happens to be National Blueberry Month, and Michigan also happens to be in the top three states for producing blueberries. So I always know I can find high-quality organic blueberries at my local market. So I combined two of my dog’s favorite fruits and a tablespoon of chia seeds, and the Blueberry Banana Fruit Leather Dog Treats were a hit with all of my dogs!
Things to consider when making fruit leather dog treats
I am not a Vet, so you must speak with your Vet before introducing any homemade treats to your dog. However, I love making dehydrated treats because they can be single or limited-ingredient. In addition, the nutrient content is generally not lost because we’re not cooking anything at high heat.
Dehydrated fruit is high in sugar content. However, there’s no added sugar. When you remove the water in the dehydrating process that leaves a higher concentration of sugar. So, it’s essential to understand how well your dog handles fruit and not overfeed these treats. I chopped my fruit leather into quarter-sized squares, and my dogs do fine with one square per day.

- Chia Seeds: These are considered a superfood! These tiny seeds are high in protein, fiber, may help to reduce inflammation, aid in brain function, and are a great source of Omega-3 fatty acids.
Supplies & Ingredients Needed for Fruit Leather Dog Treats
- Food Dehydrator
- Fruit Leather Tray (At least one tray should have came with your dehydrator.)
- Fresh Blueberries
- One Large Banana
- 1 TBSP of Chia Seeds (optional)
- Parchment Paper – I did not need to use this on my fruit leather tray. I was able to remove the fruit leather very easily when it was done. Some people do prefer to line their fruit leather tray with parchment paper before spreading their fruit puree on the train.

Ingredients
1 Cup of Fresh Blueberries
1 Large Banana
1 TBSP of Chia Seeds (optional)
Directions
- Wash and dry your blueberries. Peel and roughly chop the banana.
- Place the blueberries and banana in your food processor. Process on the puree setting. You will want the banana and blueberries to be fully pureed.
- Optional: Mix in your tablespoon of chia seeds. Allow mixture to sit for just a few minutes.
- Your dehydrator should have came with a fruit leather tray. It looks like a smooth tray that sits perfectly in your dehydrator. Smooth and evently distribute your blueberry and banana puree over your leather tray.
- Place the lid on your dehydrator and set the temperature to 145 degrees F.
- Dehydrate for 6-8 hours. My fruit leather took the full 8 hours. You will want the leather to feel firm and not sticky. Allow the leather to cool, chop into bite size pieces (I cute mine about the size of a quarter), and store in an airtight container in the fridge.
Notes
- Follow the instructions that came with your dehydrator for tips on using your fruit leather tray.
- Dehydrtator times may vary. Humidity make effect your cook time as well.
