DIY Blueberry & Peanut Butter Dog Treat Recipe (Updated 2022)

You only need four ingredients to whip up this Blueberry and Peanut Butter Dog Treat Recipe.

Note: I created this Blueberry and Peanut Butter Dog Treat Recipe at the beginning of the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic. I have since updated the recipe in 2022; you can read my revised notes at the end of this blog.

We are still between lockdown and freedom due to COVID-19 here in Michigan, but I still find the silver lining. I have been trying to find new hobbies and meaningful ways to invest my time caring for my dogs. That has translated into many attempts to try new dog treat recipes, and the dogs aren’t too upset about it.

How have you been occupying your time during quarantine, lockdown, social distancing, or the new normal (whatever you want to call it) due to Coronavirus? I love to hear how other people are getting creative! I know this hasn’t been easy on everyone, but hopefully, we can find new ways to inspire each other.

I’ve loved trying to dedicate more time to the dogs and this blog. But, unfortunately, the dogs have also had some pretty significant health issues that we’ve had to work through. Yoda had a corneal ulcer in March, and Luna was diagnosed with IVDD in late May.
I look forward to sharing the journey we’ve been on with all of you very soon.

Michigan Blueberry Season

It is blueberry season here in Michigan, so there’s no better time to incorporate this excellent fruit into fresh dog treats! Buying fruit that is in season means the fruit is more flavorful, fresher, and has the greatest quality of nutrients.

Both the French Bulldogs and Pitbulls in my home LOVE fruit! Too much fruit can cause gastrointestinal upset, but you can always find me giving all of our dogs a little taste of a strawberry, banana, watermelon, or some blueberries. Fresh blueberries made excellent pill pockets when we were administering medication during Luna’s IVDD recovery period.

Blueberries have so many great health benefits for both dogs and humans! They’re rich in antioxidants, and Vitamin A promotes eye health (a big perk for French Bulldogs and Senior Dogs) and encourages a healthy immune system. In addition, they contain Iron, plus a long list of many other beneficial nutrients.

Update 2022 DIY Blueberry and Peanut Butter Dog Treat Recipe

Blueberry and peanut butter dog treat recipe

I just remade this recipe and was so happy with the results! Seeing how I’ve grown in my curation of dog treat recipes is cool. In the original recipe, you’ll know that I put all of the ingredients into a food processor together.

As I just remade this recipe the other day, I puréed all of the wet ingredients first and then mixed that into the oat flour I had already processed into a powder. This method resulted in treats that were bluer.

The crunchier consistency and bake time did not change. So you can make this blueberry and peanut butter dog treat recipe using either method and achieve the same results – a homemade dog treat that your dog will love!

Ingredients

  • 2 cups of Quick Oats

  • 1/3 cup of Blueberries (Thaw berries if using frozen)

  • 3 Tablespoons of Peanut Butter (Make sure it does NOT contain Xylitol)

  • 1/2 cup of Unsweetened Applesauce or two Eggs lightly beaten

Directions

  • Preheat oven to 350 F.
Puree or thoroughly mash your blueberries. You want a mostly liquid consistency and not large pieces of fruit. Set the puree aside.
  • Place 2 cups of Quick Oats in your food processor with a blade and blend for 15-30 seconds. You will want most of the oats to look blended but it’s okay if your mix still has a few large oat pieces.
  • Place all other ingredients in your food processor with the oats. Blueberry puree, 3 heaping tablespoons of peanut butter, 1/2 cup of unsweetened applesauce -OR- 2 lightly beaten eggs. Blend until well combined.
  • This is a stickier dough but it will create a dry treat after baking. Roll dough into small one inch balls, place on your baking sheet, and then gently flatten in the middle with your thumb.
  • Bake for 25-30 minutes. You will see the edges start to lightly brown.

Notes

  • I prefer to store treats made with fruit in the fridge in an airtight container.
  • Oven times may vary. Baking could be shorter or longer depending on your treat size.

  1. Great recipe! My pets LOVE blueberry flavoured goodies that we pick up from our local pet store. I’m going to have to make sure that I try this recipe out.
