Happy National Dog Mom’s Day!

First: We just want to wish all of the dedicated dog mom’s out there a Happy Dog Mom’s Day on May 9th! What better way to celebrate than with a wholesome and homemade dog treat recipe?

Taking a break mid photo session so Luna and Okja can taste test their fresh baked treats. They definitely approved!

Well, quarantine life has given me the opportunity to be a part time blogger and full time dog mom! I know everyone is facing a lot of hardship right now due to the pandemic but in our house we are always working on finding things to be happy about. So my silver lining is that I’ve gotten to do a lot things around the house that I never feel I have time for, I am spending lots of time with my pups, I get to put more thought into my blogging and our Instagram account, and I get to make more DIY dog treats. So we’re going to keep this short and sweet. I think many of you will already have these ingredients in your pantry and if not just grab them on your next grocery run. All of the ingredients have a pretty long shelf life so it’s not a big deal if you don’t get around to making them right away.

I rolled out the treats on Quick Oats because the dough was pretty sticky. These treats are pretty moist due to the sweet potato and egg/unsweetened applesauce.
Ready to pop in the oven!
Fresh baked treats! I recommend letting these cool and then storing in an air tight container in the fridge.

What You’ll Need:

  • One Large Sweet Potato
  • 2 Cups of Oat Flour. You may want more to create a less sticky dough but that will depend on your preference. You will also want a handful of quick oats to roll out your dough on.
  • 1 Egg or 1/4 Cup of Unsweetened Applesauce

3 Ingredient dog treats that your pup will love!

Ingredients

  • 1 Large Sweet Potato

  • 2 cups of Oat Flour [Clickable link in instructions on how to easily make your own Oat Flour.]

  • 1 Egg – OR – 1/4 Cup of Unsweetened Applesauce

  • A handful of Quick Oats to roll your dough in

Directions

  • First preheat your oven to 350 F.
Microwave your sweet potato to cook and soften it. Wash thoroughly, pat dry, pierce several times with a fork, microwave on high for 3 minutes, flip over and microwave for an additional 2 minutes. If the sweet potato isn’t soft at this point just continue to microwave in 1 minute increments. Allow to cool so you can comfortably handle the sweet potato.
  • Once your sweet potato is cool enough to handle you will need to scoop out 1 cup for this recipe. If you have any left over you can top your pups food with it for a yummy breakfast or dinner food topper.
  • Measure out two cups of oat flour. You can find really easy step-by-step instructions to quickly make your own oat flour within my Strawberry Banana Dog Treat Recipe
  • Add all of your ingredients into a mixing bowl: 1 cup of sweet portato, 2 cups of oat flour, and 1 egg (or 1/4 cup of unsweetened applesauce.) Combine well with your hands or a spatula.
  • This creates a pretty sticky dough! I found it helpful to lay out some quick oats on my cutting board, I rolled out the dough to about 1/4-1/2 inch this, then I added more quick oats to the top of my slab of dough.
  • I used a small cookie cutter to cut quarter and half dollar size treats. Line your baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone bake mat.
  • Bake for 20-25 minutes. These are moist treats so you shouldn’t expect them to seem dry or crunchy. A few edges might brown up but other than that they won’t really crisp up.
  • I stored these in an airtight container in the fridge for one week. I would not consider them to be shelf stable because they have a lot of moisture.
