I can’t believe this year is winding down. 2021 hasn’t been the easiest year, but I am thankful for all of the gifts it’s given me. I am grateful we have a house full of healthy humans and dogs. Homemade Thanksgiving Dog Treats seemed like the perfect way to show my dogs how grateful I am for them.

I am so thankful that Elvis is now a part of our family too. It’s been fun showing Elvis the good life and watching him bond with Yoda and Luna. The verdict is still out on Okja, their relationship is moving a little more slowly, and that’s okay. Patience is key in this situation, and I am confident they will find their flow together soon.

Two weeks ago, I showed you our Fall-inspired Lickimat recipe, and Elvis has been loving learning about enrichment. You can check out my most recent Instagram Reel of him enjoying his first Toppl here. So if you’re looking to keep your dog occupied during your Thanksgiving meal, give this Lickimat or Toppl recipe a try!

These treats came together quickly with chickpea flour, fully cooked ground turkey, green peas, boiled sweet potato with a bit of turmeric and parsley.

  • Turkey: This lean protein helps build muscle, is a good source of iron, zinc, potassium, and vitamin B6
  • Chickpea Flour: Rich in fiber and is a good source of protein.
  • Green Peas: Gentle on the digestive system, high in fiber to help maintain canine’s weight and cholesterol.
  • Sweet Potato: Support a healthy balance of gut bacteria, promotes healthy skin, coat, and eyes.
  • Parsley: Naturally freshens breath, contains folic acid, vitamin A & C.
  • Tumeric: Can help relieve joint stiffness, helps maintain a healthy inflammatory response, aids in digestion.

*Always consult with your vet before introducing new foods to your dog. Be mindful of food sensitivities and introduce new foods slowly. This recipe is simply just a treat for your dog and not meant to replace a full balanced meal or diet.

Thanksgiving foods that are safe to share with your dogs

My vet would probably say not to feed my dog any Thanksgiving foods, and I generally agree with her. However, food items like turkey meat, sweet potatoes, pumpkin, peas, green beans, and Brussel sprouts can usually be considered safe for your dog. Check out the ASPCA’s list of dog-safe fruits and veggies here.

HOWEVER, I know I love cooking things in garlic, with onions, using sauces, etc. which makes all of that safe food for dogs no longer safe for consumption. In addition, bones and fatty foods can also be unsafe for dogs – even life-threatening by causing pancreatitis or blockages.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup of Chickpea Flour

  • 1 cup of fully cooked ground Turkey

  • 1 Chia Egg (or one regular egg if your dog is not sensitive to eggs)

  • 1/4 cup of cooked Green Peas (frozen/unseasoned peas are what I used)

  • 1/4 cup of boiled and mashed Sweet Potato (unseasoned)

  • 2 tsp of dried Parsley (optional)

  • 1 tsp Turmeric (optionall)

Directions

  • Preheat oven to 350 F. If you’re using a Chia Egg – combine one tbsp of chia seeds with three tbsp of warm water. Warm your frozen peas in the microwave according to the package. Peel and boil your sweet potato for 15 minutes, and mash with a fork. Set everything aside while you prep the other ingredients.
  • Fully cook one cup of ground turkey. I cooked mine with a small amount of olive oil.
  • Combine cup of fully cooked ground turkey and chickpea flour in a food processor. Process until fully combined.
  • Place turkey and chickpea mixture in a mixing bowl, combine mashed sweet potato, green peas, chia egg (or regular egg), tumeric, and parsley.
  • Scoop heaping tsp size spoonfuls onto a baking sheet. Lightly mash easy dough ball flat with a fork or your thumb.
  • Bake for 15-17 minutes. Allow to cool and store in a glass container for up to 10 days in the fridge.

Notes

  • *Always consult with your vet before introducing new foods to your dog. Be mindful of food sensitivities and introduce new foods slowly. This recipe is simply just a treat for your dog and not meant to replace a full balanced meal or diet.
  • I do not recommend using an canned vegetables as they are often high in sodium. Aim for frozen or fresh veggies and fully cook them.
